Kaiser Wilhelm I Centenary Medal 1897
Kaiser Wilhelm Centenary Medal 1897. Unnamed as issued. Obverse: The bust of Kaiser Wilhelm in uniform wearing a pickelhaube, with the legends 'WILHELM DER GROSSE DEUTSCHER KAISER' in the top left quarter and 'KOENIG VON PRUSSEN' on the right. Reverse: A crown over a sword, septre and orb at the base with a part laurel and oak leaf wreath. The legend above of 'ZUM ANDENKENAN DEN HUNDERSTEN GEBURTSTAG DES GROSSEN KAISER WILHELM I 1797-22.MAERZ-1897.' on six lines. The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 35 mm plain watered yellow ribbon folded into a triangular shape.
Awarded to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Prussian Kaiser Wilhelm 1 in 1897. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
