Description

Saxony Military Order of St. Henry Silver Medal. Unnamed as issued. Obverse: The bust of King Friedrich August V facing right with 'FRIEDRICH AUGUST KOENIG V. SACHSEN' around the circumference. Reverse: A laurel wreath surrounding 'VERDIENST UM DAS VATERLAND' (For service to the fatherland), on three lines, with crossed flags and crossed cannon at the base. The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender and attached to the ribbon by a small steel clip. The 37 mm pale blue ribbon, with 5 mm yellow stripes near the edges, is folded in a triangular shape and has a gilt brooch pin stitched to the back.

History / Summary

The Military Order of St Henry was instituted by King Friedrich August III for meritorious service to the fatherland of Saxony 1736. Originally issued as a Bath Cross only it later included four classes of the cross cross, a gold medal and a silver medal. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
