Description

Reclamation of Palermo 1860 Medal. Obverse: A Roman eagle standing on an S.P.Q.R. scroll, with 'AI PRODI CUI FU DUCE GARIBALDI' (To the brave man that was Duke Garibaldi) around the circumference. Reverse: The inscription 'IL MUNICIPIO PALERMITANO RIVENDICATO MDCCCLX' (The City of Palermitano reclaimed 1860) within a laurel wreath and 'MARSALA', 'CALATAFINI' and 'PALERMO' around the circumference. The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 37 mm red ribbon that has yellow edge stripes. A silver triskele (three legged emblem) with a Medusa head in the centre is stitched onto the ribbon.

History / Summary

Awarded as a commemorative medal to Italian troops, under the command of the late Captain Garibaldi, who reclaimed the City of Palermo in 1860. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
