Polish Cross of Valour
Description
Polish Cross of Valour. Unnamed as issued. A cross pattee with concave arms. Obverse: The Polish eagle on a shield in the centre with 'NA' (top), 'POLU' (left), 'CHWALY' (right) (on the field of glory) and '1920' (bottom) on the arms. Reverse: A vertical sword on a wreath in the centre with 'WALE' (left) and 'CZNYM' to the right (To the brave). The medal is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 38 mm crimson-purple ribbon that has a white 7 mm stripe near each edge.
History / Summary
Instituted in 1920 and awarded to members of the Polish Armed Forces for acts of valor on the battlefield. This medal is part of a collection assembled by the late Hon. Sir Thomas Hughes, Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales. It was presented to the Memorial in memory of his son, Captain Roger Forrest Hughes, Australian Army Medical Corps, who died of wounds in France on 11 December 1916 and his grandson, Flying Officer Peter Roger Forrest Hughes, 12 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, who was killed on active service while flying in the Northern Territory on 3 October 1942.
