Epaulette of Drum Major of drum and fife band : Germany Army
Description
A semi-circular piece of grey wool, piped in scarlet along its straight edge. This piped edge, is also lined with patterned white cotton lace. Running at rightangles from this lace, and giving a striped effect, is a series of eight pieces of the same lace which terminate along the curved edge of the epaulette. Sewn to the red piped edge, is a fringe of metal tassles, the length of which denote the rank or position of the individual within the band. The curved edge of the epaulette was sewn to the top curve of the shoulder seam, thus forming a verandah-like effect protruding from each shoulder of the wearer's jacket. The underside of the epaulette is lined with grey woollen material.
