Description

Rectangular folding leather case supplied with a closing strap and leather bound buckle, and a stainless steel ring for attaching to the wearer's webbing or braces. The case opens up to reveal contains two rows of medical and pharmaceutical tablet (or 'tabloid') vials, eight to each row, with a protective leather flap attached to the ends of both rows. The vials are made from ebony or a similar black wood and each has a screw lid. Each vial is labelled with a the maker's name, a description of contents and directions for use. The first row is labelled (l to r) Quinine, Ipecacuanha, Quinine, iron and aresnic compound, bisulphate, chlorodyne, opium powder, Soda-mint and zinc sulphate. The second row is labelled potassium permanganate, lead with opium, Tonic compound, Livingstone Rousers, essence of ginger, Warburg tincture, Calomel and Dover Powder. The words 'TABLOID' BRAND Trade Mark BURROUGHS WELLCOME & CO LONDON' are gold-blocked into the leather on the inner flap. The owner has also marked his details - 'F WILKINSON Sydney NSW Australia' - in pen on the inside.
