History / Summary
England was subjected to numerous aerial bombing raids by both aircraft and dirigibles during the First World War. This air raid shelter sign hung in the centre of Piccadilly Circus, London, directing the public to the Piccadilly Tube station that was an air raid shelter during the First World War. During the Victory celebrations on the night of 11 November 1918, an Australian soldier climbed the post on which it was hung, took it down and gave it to Mrs Margaret Jane Morrow who kept it till the 1950s.
