Martini-Henry Rifle : Major J Bruche, Commonwealth Horse
Description
Martini-Henry lever action single shot rifle. Falling block action marked on the left side with a triangle over WESTLEY RICHARDS LTD and on the right MADE ESPECIALLY FOR Z.A.R. The op of the breech is dated 1897. It has a wooden butt and fore end that has a central barrel band and a steel end cap. Sights are a front barleycorn post and an adjustable rear leaf. The rifle is missing the cleaning rod.
History / Summary
This rifle was in the collection of Major General Sir Julius Bruche and was captured from a Boer during his service in South African War. The rifle is a commercial manufacture of the Martini-Henry Mark IV and is one of a batch ordered by the South African Republic (ZAR).
