Description
Group portrait of some of the 8th Reinforcements to the 35th Battalion, at Number 13 Training Camp on the Salisbury Plains. A representation of the Australian General Service Badge (Rising Sun) can be seen in the background, along with other insignia, cut into the chalk of the hillside. 3388 Private (Pte) Henry George Patrick Savage is identified, seated at the far left of the group. Pte Savage, an 18 year old farm hand from Tullamore, NSW, enlisted in June 1917. He was in Numer 13 Training Camp for four months, before joining his battalion in France in February 1918. Pte Savage was killed in action on 4 April 1918, near Villers Bretonneux. This photograph was sent as a postcard to his sister Annie on 26 November 1917.
