Description
Outdoor group portrait of members of 2/1 Heavy Battery, which formed part of Sparrow Force, tasked with the defence of Timor against the Japanese. Identified are TX4877 Staff Sergeant (S Sgt) Ian William Rennie (left-centre, hand on hip and holding a tin mug) and NX38458 Bombadier (Bdr) Tom Uren (third from left, holding a tin mug and a newspaper). With the fall of Timor to Japanese troops in 1942, they were taken prisoner of war (POW) and worked on the construction of the Thai-Burma railway in forced POW labour groups. Both men survived the war and were repatriated in 1945.
