Hand coloured studio portrait of 3972 Private (Pte) Alfred Mendes and his mother Ada Mendes. Pte Mendes embarked with the 9th Reinforcements, 25th Battalion from Brisbane aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62) on 31 January 1916. He transferred to the 49th Battalion on 2 April 1916. Pte Mendes was killed in action at France on 5 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
