Description

Studio portrait of 106735 Aircraftswoman Florence May Jackson, Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), of Ryde, NSW. The daughter of William Turner Jackson, a veteran of the Gallipoli Campaign and Lanetta May Jackson, Florence enlisted in the WAAAF on 15 October 1942 and was stationed at Brisbane Wireless Station as a teleprinter operator. She she was killed in an accident at Archerfield aerodrome, Queensland on 27 March 1943 when the RAAF C-47 Dakota clipped a tree during a night take-off and crashed, killing 23 service personnel including Florence and two other WAAAF members who were travelling home to spend leave with their families in Sydney. She is commemorated at Brisbane (Lutwyche) Cemetery.
