Description
A 12 foot by 14 foot hole on the waterline under the bridge on the port side of HMAS Australia. This damage was inflicted by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft attack on 7 January 1945. A temporary patch is covering the damage. HMAS Australia was hit by five Japanese suicide bombers during the Lingayen Gulf operation and fought off a number of other attacks. Despite the damage sustained she stayed in action until the attack on 9 January 1945 when her foward funnel was damaged beyond local repair.
