Description

Damage to part of the superstructure of HMAS Australia inflicted by a Japanese Kamikaze attack in January 1945. The plate has been hit so violenty eight of the steel rivets on the seam have popped. HMAS Australia was hit by five Japanese suicide bombers during the Lingayen Gulf operation and fought off a number of other attacks. Despite the damage sustained she stayed in action until the attack on 9 January 1945 when her foward funnel was damaged beyond local repair.
