Crimea Medal : George Sharpe, HMS Tigress
Crimea Medal with the bar 'SEBASTOPOL'. The recipient's name only is engraved on the edge. Obverse: The diademed head of Queen Victoria with the date '1854' underneath and the legend 'VICTORIA REGINA' to the left and right on the circumference. Reverse: A Roman warrior holding a sword in his right hand and a circular shield in front of him with his left whilst being crowned by a small winged figure of Victory. The word 'CRIMEA' is written vertically on the left side. The medal is fitted with swivel foliated suspender and piece of 27 mm light blue ribbon with yellow edges. The acorn leaf clasp is loose on the ribbon and it has a silver buckle brooch for wear.
Awarded to George Sharpe for campaign service in the Crimea and at the seige of Sebastopol, 1854-1855. The donor of the medal stated that George Sharpe served in HMS Tigress but there were no ships of this name in the Royal Navy between 1818 and 1911.
