Victoria Local Forces Long & Efficient Service Medal : S Jory
Victoria Local Forces Long & Efficient Service Medal. The recipient's name is impressed on the edge. Obverse: The badge and motto of Victoria within a garter belt, surmounted by a crown and the words 'LOCAL FORCES VICTORIA' around the circumference. Reverse: 'FOR LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE' on four lines. The medal is fitted with a swivelling scroll suspender and a piece of 33 mm white ribbon which has purple edges.
The issue of this medal was considered in 1871 but not approved until 1880, the first issue being in 1881. It is unique in that it was issued without Royal consent which was not given until 1882. Officers could also receive medal until 1883 when the Volunteer Officer's Decoration was approved. The medal is impressed 'S Jory, 1882' but his name does not appear on the roll printed by R G Williams. Jory is said to have served earlier in the Crimean War of 1854-1855.
