Description
Charles De Gaulle is depicted wearing a decidedly old fashioned ladies couture for 1968 when this cartoon was produced. Nearing the end of his tenure as French leader, De Gaulle is seen as outmoded and when visiting his tailor he is refusing to shorten the hemline of his dress. At this time tensions in France are fermenting within the mining, steel and textile construction industries where people are working long hours and have no rights. This cartoon symbolises the uprisings and strikes that ensued.
