Description
ScanEagle UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) with its stowage / transport case. This grey propellor-driven aircraft has a cylindrical fuselage with a rear-mounted piston engine. In the nose is the facility for the fitting of any one of a range of surveillance technologies. Marked in black on the top surface of the fuselage is, '06 - 274'.
History / Summary
ScanEagle UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), or drone, of the type used in Iraq and Afghanistan. This ScanEagle; Aircraft No. 274 saw service in Iraq and had its first flight from Talil Air Base on 14 December 2006.
Launched from a pneumatic catapult and powered by a 2-stroke piston engine, the remotely controlled, lightweight ScanEagle can remain in the air for 24 hours with an altitude of up to 16,000 feet. Carrying an electro-optic or infrared imager in a gyro-stabilized turret, it provides real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to troops on the ground.
From 2006 to 2012 ScanEagle UAVs operated in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan, accumulating over 41,000 operational hours during that period, with more than 32,000 of those hours in Afghanistan.
