Collection related to the service of 413394 John Maxwell Knight RAAF
Identification portrait of 413332 Leading Aircraftman (LAC) William James Atkinson, of North Sydney, NSW. A bank clerk prior to enlisting on 17 August 1941, he completed his initial training and progressed to the Intermediate and Advanced Training Course 20 for pilots at No. 7 Service Flying Training School (7SFTS), RAAF Station Deniliquin, NSW, Australia held from 9 March 1942 to 25 June 1942. He embarked from Sydney on 24 August 1942 for the United Kingdom where he transferred to the RAF. On 1 June 1944, while attached to No 131 Squadron RAF, Warrant Officer (WO) Atkinson was reported missing, in a Supermarine Spitfire 1X, during air operations near St Brieuc, France. His body was recovered and he is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Pirbright, Surrey, England, United Kingdom. WO Atkinson was 21 years of age.
