Description
Snider-Enfield Artillery Carbine. Lock marked Crown over VR and TOWER over 1858. The breech is a Mk III but not marked as such. The bayonet boss is numbered 319 to match the original bayonet. The butt tang is engraved TpA 182 (part erased) indicating Tasmanian Permanent Artillery. It has a white buff leather sling but is missing the firing pin protector and captive chain to the trigger guard.
History / Summary
This carbine was originally an Enfield Pattern 1858 muzzle loading Artillery Carbine but it has been converted to a breech loading Snider-Enfield MkIII in the late 1860's or early 1870's. The markings indicate that it was used by the Tasmanian Permanent Artillery. These carbines were also used by all the State Colonies in Australia.
