Studio portrait of 3139 Private (Pte) Alfred John Evans, 58th Battalion. A farmer from Anglesea River via Geelong, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Evans embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Medic on 16 December 1916. Whilst serving in France he was killed in action on 4 July 1918, aged 25, and buried near where he fell. His grave could not be found following the Armistice and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
