Portrait of 40 Corporal (Cpl) Ernest Shannon, 20th Battalion. A lineman prior to enlisting on 19 April 1914, he embarked from Sydney for the Gallipoli Peninsula in June 1915. Cpl Shannon was promoted to Sergeant on 1 September 1915. In December 1916, he was demoted to Corporal after being absent without leave (AWOL) for two days in France. Cpl Shannon was wounded on 5 February 1917 and died five days later. He was 39 years old.
