Description
Gunnery practice on board HMAS Success in the Indian Ocean en route to the Persian Gulf.
One of a series of photographs taken by Jack Picone at the onset of the Gulf War while assigned as the accredited pool photographer for the Australian media and embedded with the Australian Navy. He documented the Naval deployment aboard HMAS Success, HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Darwin. Over 1,800 Australian Defence personnel served in the Gulf War from August 1990 to September 1991 as part of a 40,000 strong coalition force. The Australian Naval contribution to the duration of the Gulf War comprised three Adelaide-class guided missile frigates, a Perth-class guided missile destroyer, and two replenishment oilers.
