Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk I* Cavalry Carbine : Captain H.G Carstairs, Victorian Mounted Rifles
Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk 1* bolt action carbine. Receiver marked with a crown over VR ENFIELD 1900 L.E.C. I under the bolt arm. It has a wood butt, fore end and top hand guard to the fore sight muzzle cap. The butt is carved in the right side with Capt. H.G. Carstairs in a scroll, 3rd Australian Bushmen, A Squadron within a crown, 5th V/MR F.Coy within a crown, the South African coat of arms between flags and a top eagle and has inset a silver Kruger coin. The left side is carved RHODESIA, TRANSVAAL, ORANGE RIVER COLONY, NATAL and ZULULAND on a chequered background. The wrist of the butt is also chequered. One screw on the fore end under the rear sight, for the leather cover, is missing.
This carbine was carried by Captain Harold Grafton Carstairs, Victorian Mounted Rifles and Australian Bushmen contingents during the South African War 1899-1902.
