Description

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto alighting from a staff car during a tour of inspection to Japanese units in the South West Pacific in April 1943. Yamamoto was the Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Imperial Navy's Combined Fleet, a position he held from 30 August 1939, until his death on 18 April 1943. Yamamoto's aircraft was flying from Rabaul to Bougainville when it was attacked over Bougainville by a flight of P38 Lightning's and shot down. (Frame enlargement from F06851 (frame number 7887).
