Description
The staff of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company on Direction Island watch the action between HMAS Sydney and the German commerce raider Emden. The Sydney defeated the Emden, which ran ashore on North Keeling Island, and rescued and tended to the crew, many of whom were badly wounded. The ships are visible at some distance, on the horizon.
