HMS Glowworm (H92), a 1,345 ton G Class destroyer, manoeuvring for an attack on the 14000 ton German Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper. This action took place some 120 miles west of Trondheim, Norway, when Glowworm, badly damaged, rammed Admiral Hipper. As a result of this the Admiral Hipper suffered superficial damage to her bulwarks and outer compartments containing some 200 tons of meat stores, which was flooded with 500 tons of sea water. The forward starboard torpedo tube mount was wrecked. After she sank thirty two survivors from Glowworm were picked up by Admiral Hipper. Thirty two survivors were picked up by Admiral Hipper from Glowworm after she sank. The destroyer’s captain, Lieutenant Commander Gerard Roope, was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
