Description
The wrecked German cruiser Emden, run ashore on a reef at North Keeling Island after her encounter with HMAS Sydney. The Sydney's successful action ended the career of a highly successful commerce raider. The Emden eluded capture by larger cruisers of three allied nations for two months; within six weeks she captured or sank 21 merchant vessels as well as bombarding oil tanks at Madras and attacking warships anchored in Penang Harbour.
