Studio portrait of Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Gordon MacDonnell, 603 Squadron, RAF. A cane inspector from Cairns, Flt Lt MacDonnell travelled to London to join the RAF in October 1940. Flt Lt MacDonnell was recorded as missing in action following an air battle off the coast of Turkey on 16 January 1944. He was later presumed to have died during this incident. His identical twin brother, QX19120 Lieutenant Desmond King MacDonnell, 2/31 Battalion, died of wounds in Papua on the Kokoda Trail on 14 September 1942.
