Description

Studio portrait of 6614 Private (Pte) Ernest Henry Parslow, 1st Battalion. A farmer prior to enlisting on 23 March 1916, Pte Parslow embarked for overseas service aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7 October 1916. Admitted to hospital with tonsillitis, he was evacuated to England on the hospital ship "Gloucester Castle", which was torpedoed off the Isle of Wight. Surviving this ordeal, he returned to his unit five months later. Wounded in action on 4 October 1917, he was eventually returned to Australia, where he was discharged medically unfit. His cousin (raised as a brother) 6601 Private (Pte) Albert John Oswald Parslow, who joined up with him, died of wounds while Ernest was in hospital with tonsillitis.
