Informal portrait of 2416 Driver (Dvr) Gilbert Malcolm Lucas, Australian Army Service Corps, in a hospital bed in Ward S III B, No. 15 British General Hospital. Dvr Lucas is resting against a cushion covered in a Union Jack and has a copy of "The Bulletin" on his bed. The mosquito net above his bed has been neatly twisted around its support. His slouch hat hangs on the wall behind him, above what appears to be a small branch of gum (Eucalyptus) leaves. Dvr Gilbert was admitted to hospital with "compound fracture ribs", the result of an accident when driving a general service waggon. He returned to Australia in September 1918.
This image is from one of three albums (P10636, P10637 and P10638) relating to the service of Staff Nurse (SN) Kathleen Blanche Gawler, Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve (QAIMNSR). This particular album covers the period when she was based at No. 15 British General Hospital, Alexandria, in 1915-1916.
