Description

AWM66 comprises miscellaneous RAAF records, mainly from the Second World War, headquarters, commands, installations, units and other RAAF related agencies. The series comprises operational records (signals, instructions, reports, information bulletins, operations room records), intelligence records (summaries, situation reports, tactical appreciations and various types of log books.
AWM66 was accessioned to the Australian War Memorial from RAAF Historical Section on 18 October 1961. These records were arranged in, initially, 24 identified creator-based subseries, being the records of headquarters, commands, installations, intelligence units and other RAAF and RAAF related agencies. A 25th subseries incorporated miscellaneous material. In May 1997, a collection of registers from RAAF Liaison Office, India, were added as a 26th subseries. In 1998, RAAF registers of the Malayan Emergency and Vietnam War were added as the 27th and 28th subseries. In July 2004, the 29th subseries was created, the purpose of which was to document miscellaneous records of mixed provenance.
A collection of strays from RAAF Air Historical and Department of Defence were acquired by the Memorial in 1997 as accession OW97/18. These consisted of war stand (readiness) reports; technical notes; campaign notes; war history notes; RAF publications (all Second World War) and some material from Korean War. In 2011, these records were accessioned with AWM66 as items 1 to 517.
