After landing at Gallipoli on 12 May 1915, he was taken ill in July 1915 and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. He returned to Gallipoli in September and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 11 October 1915. After again taking ill in early November, he was evacuated to Malta and then transferred to Alexandria in December 1915. Following a period in hospital in Cairo, he was returned to Australia and his appointment terminated due to ill health on 23 June 1916.
