Studio portrait of 839 Private (Pte) Albert Read Cubitt, 14th Battalion. A tram conductor from Abbotsford, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Cubitt embarked with the rank of Lance Corporal with G Company from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses on 22 December 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was wounded in action and evacuated. Subsequently returning to Gallipoli he was promoted to Acting Corporal and reported as missing in action. A later Court of Enquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 8 August 1915, aged 24, and he is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
