Japanese Type 93 75cm Base Line Stereoscopic Range Finder and Metal Box
Japanese Type 93 75 cm base line stereoscopic range finder in metal box. The instrument consists of a long tube with two circular openings cut into each end at approximately 75 cm from one another. These openings are fitted with two objective lens which can be viewed by two eyepieces which are positioned in the center of the tube. This range finder has a magnification of 12 degrees and focal length of 2 degrees verticle and 3 degrees left and right. The are two bamboo replacement handles located under the eyepieces. There are a number of spare parts located inside the box including anti-glare lens. Also packed inside the box are a small tripod and mount. Markings: Translation of Japanese characters located on an aluminium plate on the outside of the box "BOX FOR TYPE 93 LIGHT RANGE FINDER FOR FIELD BATTLE/ SERIAL NO. 10202/ MANUFACTURED IN OCTOBER 1939/ JAPAN OPTICAL INDUSTRY COMPANY INC. (NIKKO)". There is also a paper parts list attached to the inside of the box. There is also a white cotton tag located inside the box. A translation of this tag reads "TYPE 93 LIGHT RANGE FINDER x1/BATTERY TROOP II BA". Impressed between eyepieces "12 x verticle 2 degrees LEFT AND RIGHT 3 degrees/ NIKKO/ NO. 10202/ JES (Japanese for screw)/ BASE DISTANCE 749.25mm/ arsenal mark", on mount "91, BASE DISTANCE 749.25mm, NIKKO/10175/?". Transalation of Japanese characters located on two screws "hole for drying". Other characters located near calibration knobs "DISTANCE ADJUSTMENT and 1/2 DISTANCE ADJUSTMENT".
This equipment was used for artillery rangefinding purposes. It was vcalibrated to measure distances up to 10 km.
