Miniature German Cross in Silver
Description
Miniature German Cross in Silver. Obverse: An eight pointed radiant star with a black swastika in the centre surrounded by a silver laurel wreath and red circle. Reverse: Stamped L/57 and fitted with a 45 mm stick pin.
History / Summary
The German Cross (also called the War Order of the German Cross) had two classes, gold and silver. It was introduced by Adolf Hitler in September 1941 to recognise repeated military achievements over prolonged periods of time. It was to be awarded only in wartime. However, the War Merit Cross First Class was a prerequisite decoration before for the silver German Cross could be awarded. The miniature Cross was worn on the lapel when in civilian dress.
