1939 Silver Wound Badge. Oval shaped silver plated alloy. Obverse: A German steel helmet, with a swastika on the left side, over crossed swords within a laurel wreath tied at the base with a bow. Reverse: Plain with a single vertical brooch pin.
Instituted on 1 September 1939 and awarded to military personel wounded three or four times in action or for only one wound if it involved brain damage, facial disfigurement or the loss of a hand, a foot, an eye or hearing. This badge is part of a collection of Second World War German orders, decorations, badges and insignia acquired by Flight Lieutenant K G Hesketh, RAAF Historical Records Section, who was based in London, but who made a number of visits to Germany immediately after the Second World War.
