German Army General Assault Badge
German Army General Assault Badge. Obverse: A voided German Nazi eagle standing on a swastika over a crossed stick grenade and a Mauser bayonet, all within an oak leaf wreath. Reverse: Plain with a single vertical brooch pin.
Created on 1 June 1940. Initially an award for pioneer troops, it was later extended to other support personnel, including artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft crews. The award was made to all ranks who had taken part in three different assaults, on three different days, armed only with hand held weapons. This badge is part of a collection of Second World War German orders, decorations, badges and insignia acquired by Flight Lieutenant K G Hesketh, RAAF Historical Records Section, who was based in London, but who made a number of visits to Germany immediately after the Second World War.
