German Navy E-Boat War Badge
German Navy E-Boat War Badge, second pattern. Obverse: An oval oak leaf wreath surmounted by a Nazi eagle, with outstretched wings, and clutching a swastika in its claws, all in gilt. In the centre a voided German E boat on waves in silver placed across the sides of the wreath. Reverse: Plain concave gilt with a large horizontal brooch pin across the centre and a wire hook at the top.
The E-boat Badge, designed by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin, was first instituted on 30 May 1941as the E-Boat (Torpedo boat) offensive against allied shipping was stepped up. Until this time E-Boat crews had received the same badge as Destroyer crews. Redesigned in 1943 the badge was awarded for a minimum of twelve sorties, being wounded, being sunk or participating in successful missions. The first pattern badge had a smaller eagle at the top and the E Boat did not cross the wreath on the left. This badge is part of a collection of Second World War German orders, decorations, badges and insignia acquired by Flight Lieutenant K G Hesketh, RAAF Historical Records Section, who was based in London, but who made a number of visits to Germany immediately after the Second World War.
