Description

Nazi German Social Welfare Medal. Obverse: A cross couped with a German eagle and swastika in the centre. Reverse: The inscription 'Medaille Fur deutsche volkspflege' (Medal for Social Welfare) on three lines. The medal is fitted with a small loose ring suspender and a piece of 31 mm red ribbon which has 5 mm white edges.

History / Summary

Instituted in May 1939 and awarded to social welfare workers in recognition of meritorious achievement, for services tending to the general and specific needs of the German population during the Second World War. This medal is part of a collection of Second World War German orders, decorations, badges and insignia acquired by Flight Lieutenant K G Hesketh, RAAF Historical Records Section, who was based in London, but who made a number of visits to Germany immediately after the Second World War.
