Description
Mounted skin of a blue bar cock carrier pigeon. The bird bears an aluminium leg ring stamped '682:D [broad arrow symbol]D:43:Q'.
History / Summary
This bird was bred in 1943 by a civilian pigeon fancier in Queensland, who later donated him to the army.
Location of Detachment at time of flight: Detachment 7 Pigeon Section (Type A), attached to 29 Infantry Brigade Signal Section, Bougainville.
Copy of message: From: '17 Platoon A Company To: 29 Brigade. Send help to Base "A" and Medical supplies.'
Distance Message carried and Time: 6 miles in 10 minutes.
As a result of the message reinforcements were despatched together with medical supplies thereby relieving the pressure on the platoon.
