Description
Mounted skin of a Japanese army carrier pigeon, a blue bar cock with an aluminium ring on the left leg impressed with '9456', and with Japanese characters which translate 'South 1943'.
History / Summary
This bird was captured at the Tor River near Wakde Island in the Dutch New Guinea (now Irian Jaya) on 26 May 1944, by 27th United States Command Engineer Battalion. It was sent to the Headquarters 1st Pigeon Section. Photograph 073888 shows the bird in life.
