Description

Studio portrait of 3242 Acting Sergeant Harold Ross, 8th Battalion from Brighton, Victoria. A 25 year old printer prior to enlistment on 28 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements of the 24th Battalion from Melbourne on 26 November 1915 aboard HMAT Commonwealth. After being promoted to Sergeant on 14 March 1916, he was wounded in action in France on 26 July 1916. He recovered from his wounds and returned to France where he was awarded a Military Medal on 17 May 1917 and then promoted to Second Lieutenant on 29 September 1917. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Anzac Ridge, Ypres, Belgium and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. See also DASEY2493.
