Studio portrait of 1872 Private (Pte) Arthur Stanley Hoodless, 9th Battalion from Railton, Tasmania. A 21 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 1 February 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Star of England (A15) on 8 April 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 9th Battalion at Gallipoli on 26 May. Three months later, he was taken ill and evacuated to Egypt and then sent to England for further medical treatment. Pte Hoodless re-joined the 9th Battalion in France on 29 July 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 29 November 1916. He was wounded in action near Albert, France on 25 February 1917 and died from his wounds that same day. L Cpl Hoodless is buried in the Bazentin-le-Petit Military Cemetery, Bazentin, France. His brother, 1837 Pte Cyril James Roy Hoodless, 9th Battalion died of wounds in France on 31 May 1917 [see image H06411].
