Studio portrait of 1837 Private (Pte) Cyril James Roy Hoodless, 9th Battalion from Railton, Tasmania. A 19 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 20 June 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 26th Battalion from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAS Orsova (A67) on 17 July 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he then joined the 26th Battalion at Gallipoli on 4 September. Seven weeks later, he was taken ill and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. Pte Hoodless proceeded to France with the 26th Battalion in March 1916 and then transferred to the 9th Battalion in November 1916. He was wounded in action near Noreuil on 7 May and died from his wounds on 31 May 1917. Pte Hoodless is buried in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Boulogne, France. His brother, 1872 Pte Arthur Stanley Hoodless, 9th Battalion died of wounds in France on 25 February 1917 [see image H06410].
