Nazi flag taken from German Consulate in Sydney
Red cotton flag edged with a silver fringe on three sides. Seven aluminium rings are evenly spaced along the hoist, attached with strips of self fabric. A large black swastika on a circular white ground is appliqued to the centre. A 150 x 180 mm brown cotton rectangle embroidered in white, 'Sydney', is appliqued to the upper left canton with blue stitching.
Between the first and second world wars a small number of German and Italian Australians supported the fascist organisations which had gained power in their homelands. Local (Ortsgruppe) members of the Nazi Party in Sydney (NSPAP/AO - National Socialist German Workers Party/Foreign Organisation) carried this large swastika flag. Held for safe-keeping at the German Consulate there, it was confiscated from the consulate by Australian authorities at the beginning to the Second World War.
