Studio portrait of 1333 Private (Pte) Vernon Coldham Fussell who served as Pte James Connolly, 2nd Battalion from Roma, Queensland. A 22 year old driver prior to enlisting on 29 October 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney, NSW on 11 February 1915 aboard HMAT Seang Bee (A48). The 2nd Battalion took part in the ANZAC landings on 24 April as part of the second and third waves. Pte Fussell was killed in action on 2 May 1915 and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
