Studio portrait of 1153 Private Lawrence Carthage Weathers, 43rd Battalion from Yatala, South Australia. A 25 year old undertaker prior to enlisting on 8 February 1916, he embarked for overseas with A Company from Adelaide on 9 June 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. He joined the 43rd Battalion in France where he was wounded three times and was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) for bravery in action near Peronne, France on 2 September 1918. He was promoted Temporary Corporal (Cpl) on 10 September 1918 and was wounded in action between Rosnoy and Bony, France on 29 September 1918. He subsequently died from those wounds on the same day and is buried in Unicorn Cemetery, Vendhuille, France. His older brother, 204 Trooper Thomas Francis Weathers, 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment died of wounds at Gallipoli on 15 June 1915.
