60 kg incendiary bomb, Darwin : Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force
Japanese, 60 kilogram incendiary bomb. The main casing is bullet shaped with a double row of 20mm raised rivett heads extending around the diameter of the steel casing at the nose end. The fuze mechanism has been removed from the threaded aperture in the nose. A securing shackle and plate is rivetted to the top of the bomb casing, allowing attachment to an aircraft. The tail section consists of a steel cone rivetted to the rear of the bomb casing with four steel fins welded to the cone. Some rivetts are missing near the tail section, which has become loosened from the main casing. The bomb is completely covered in surface corrosion and the four tail fins are bent and damaged.
This bomb was dropped on Darwin in the first Japanese air raid on 19 February 1942.
