Description

Hiroki Type 35 Sub Calibre Aiming Rifle. The barrel has a brass water cooled jacket with inlet and outlet ports on the top and bottom. The bolt action is single shot with an electrically fired trigger assembly. The action and barrel are held rigid in a mount which is movable at the base. The receiver has a small copper plate on the top with three Japanese characters, believed to indicate the Maizuru Dockyard Weapons Division, and the serial number. This weapon is contained in a box, measuring 1020 mm x 190 mm x 175 mm, with accessories that include a mounting plate, a T shape screw driver, a lead bob weight on a short steel cable, a recoil assembly combination screwdriver, a bolt recoil bar, three large nuts and bolts, four large slot head bolts, a spare extractor claw and two buffer springs. A number of tools and parts missing are missing from the chest.

History / Summary

This rifle was captured at Balikpapan, Borneo in 1945 by the Headquarters Unit, 7th Division. The Type 35 aiming rifle was used with large calibre naval and coastal guns for aiming purposes and training crews in gunnery. It was bolted alongside the gun with a separate telescopic sight.
